Anxiety and Depression Medication

Although no comprehensive link has been established between anxiety and depression, people tend to use the two terms interchangeably without understanding the difference between them. Many cases have been observed where both conditions co-exist. This leads people into believing that anxiety is the offshoot of depression and vice versa.

Anxiety is  the result of a brain malfunction. A person suffering from anxiety lives under some sort of perpetual fear. It is far removed from the normal butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling that most of us get in situations that we have not faced before. Most of us feel a little apprehensive before taking an examination or having to deal with a tough situation.  Anxiety when it takes the form of a disorder can be debilitating and can prevent the patient from leading a normal existence.

There are many medications for anxiety and depression available in the market. The most common form of these medications is a class of drugs called Benzodiazepines. These drugs are sedatives and are available in a number of commercial brands. These drugs are very effective when they are used. When these drugs are withdrawn, then anxiety disorders can recur. There is also a possibility of abuse and addiction to these drugs.

Anxiety and depression by themselves are debilitating maladies. When they occur together, they are even more serious. Co-existence of the two conditions has been linked to an  innumerable number of cases of suicides. As the situation exists, more than 60 percent of depression cases also suffer from anxiety disorder in some form or the other.

Anxiety and depression are best treated together. If the depression angle is ignored while treating anxiety, chances are that treatment will not produce the desired result. The two are inextricably linked together. If depression is cured, anxiety also goes away. There are some natural medicines used to treat anxiety disorder; the Kava herb is one of them. Besides being very effective this herb has a major advantage. Unlike prescription drugs, it is not addictive in nature.
