Use Relaxation Medications To Treat Anxiety

If your anxiety has grown to real high levels and you want to get over the problem, it’s high time you get on to taking some relaxation medications. Your doctor would prescribe you these medications to get over the problem of anxiety. So, let’s take a look at what all can your doctor prescribe to treat your problem.

Benzodiazepines and Buspirone (BuSpar) are the two key relaxation medications used to treat such conditions.

Buspirone

Barbiturates or Buspirone, primarily phenobarbital, have been the most common medication for anxiety for quite some time now. These are highly effective but also have the smallish problem of being exceedingly addictive. If a patient is put on these pills for some time, he would become addicted to them. This is the reason, BuSpar is now a prescription drug that is only used to treat advanced cases.

Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines are currently the preferred relaxation medications for treatment of anxiety related problems. These medicines act like tranquilizers. Generally, these medicines will induce sleep and relax the muscles, hence the name- relaxation medications. Relaxation is primarily achieved by boosting the overall effects of Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA). This is not any normal acid which you will find in a  laboratory. GABA is a neurotransmitter. It directly impacts the response capability of the central nervous system, slowing it down considerably for a limited span of time.

The very nature of these relaxation medications makes them very serious and potent drugs. They are therefore administered under keen medical supervision. Although not complete addiction, these medicines are known to cause dependency which may be either physical or psychological or both. Add the risk of intended or unintended overdose and you are looking at the possibility of severe complications.

Another major advantage of Benzodiazepines is that they are very fast. They relieve the mind from stress in a matter of hours, leaving you feeling fresh, relaxed and full of energy. Isolated cases of these medicines taking effect in mere half an hour have also surfaced.

Side effects
These relaxation medications have some side effects too. Generally, these side effects are limited to drowsiness, decreased mental function, and lack of overall coordination. In some cases, withdrawal symptoms have also come to light, normally if relaxation medications were stopped without a cooling down period.

If taken properly and under due medical supervision, the relaxation medications can be really helpful.
