Recognizing and treating anxiety disorders

Many people have feelings of anxiety when faced with a stressful situation or after experiencing a traumatic event. People may feel an undue level of anxiety before a blind date or speaking in public. Feeling anxious before a stressful event is normal. Many people are however shy of discussing their feelings with others.

According to experts, anxiety disorder is one of the most common of behavioral disorders. However if not treated or taken for granted anxiety can graduate into crippling inhibitions, obsessive compulsive disorders or anxiety disorders. It is important to recognize when anxiety is normal and when it needs to be treated by counseling or behavioral therapy.

An anxiety disorder is manifested at two levels. One is at the physical level. At this level, a patient suffering from anxiety disorder may show symptoms such as palpitation, sweating, dizziness, chest pain and insomnia. The other level is the emotional level. Uneasiness, restlessness, apprehension and irritability are a few of the emotional symptoms that a patient of anxiety disorder may exhibit.

In order to treat anxiety disorder it is essential to consult a psychiatrist. Only after a professional diagnosis, that may involve pathological tests, has been carried out, can a treatment strategy be created. The strategy may involve multiple lines of treatment such as behavioral therapy, medication and counseling.

Medications that are used to treat usually are in the nature of antidepressants. The two types of antidepressants that are available as a form of treatment are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs and Tricyclics. The net effect of these drugs is that they increase the availability of the neurotransmitters or the feel good chemicals in the brain

When you visit your doctor, make sure that you are proactive, as you have to play an important part in your treatment. Make a full disclosure of your condition and tell the doctor about the different medications that you might be taking and other health conditions that you may be suffering from. This helps the doctor to evaluate the risks involved in prescribing a particular drug for you.

On account of the possible  side effects, people should refrain from taking these medicines without consulting a doctor. Only doctors know which medicine would be more suitable for a patient of the anxiety disorder victim.
