Depression In Older Adults Is Commom

Depression is a common problem in the elderly. Many adults deal with depression due to various reasons such as death of the spouse, health problems or lack of purpose. It is important that you know all about the problem to help your elders fight depression and be happy.

Elderly, who are suffering from depression may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms.
* Weakness and fatigue
* Sadness
* Lack of interest in everything
* Weight loss
* Restricted involvement in social activities
* Sleep related problems
* Unexplained weight loss
* Constantly thinking about death

Causes of depression in adults

* Loneliness - This is one of the most common causes of depression in adults. Quite often adults are living alone and have a restricted social circle which makes them feel lonely and subsequently depressed.
* Feeling of being useless - After retirement adults do not have anything worth while to do because of which they tend to get depressed.
* Health issues - Old age brings along with itself numerous health problems such as pain, disability, back problems and the like. These health issues could also trigger feelings of unhappiness and subsequently lead to depression.
* Personal loss - Any personal loss in terms of death of near ones, or differences with other family members could also make an elderly person depressed.

Go out in the world - Sitting at home alone all day will not help treat the problem. Instead, it will make you even more depressed. Take a trip to the nearby market or simply go for a walk in the nearby park.

Do things that you like - Take out time for the activities that you enjoy. Read a book, listen to music, talk to your friends etc. It will make you feel relaxed and happy too.

Eat healthy meals - Eating a healthy meal is not just good for your body but your mind as well. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.

Exercise - It certainly is a little difficult to exercise when you are old. But, you can always go for a long walk or do simple stretching exercises.

Join a laughter club - This is the best thing that you can do to fight depression. Laughing releases feel good hormones known as endorphins inside the body and helps you fight the problem better.

Take your medications - If you are taking medications for depression, then make sure that you take all your medicines on time. Make sure that you do not miss any dose.
