Anti Depression Medicine

It is possible to treat depression in the early stages to some extent, by self-help. If the psychological condition of the affected person is strong enough, dealing with the early symptoms of depression is not very tough. However, when depression reaches an advanced stage, it becomes very difficult to handle. This is where the role of anti depression medicine comes into play.

Anti-depressants are usually more effective than other forms of medication for the treatment of people suffering from depression. Mild or moderate forms of depression can be cured just by psychotherapy. Depression in advanced stage should be treated with the help of a suitable anti-depressant medication.

There are different kinds of anti-depressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic anti-depressants. These drugs increase the concentration of certain neurotransmitter chemicals in the central nervous system (CNS).   The first class of drugs acts only on serotonin neurotransmitter. On the other hand, tricyclic drugs act on other transmitters as well. They may also interact with  other  chemicals in your body.

An anti depression medicine is strictly a prescription drug.  These medications may have a number of undesirable side-effects. Some medicines can cause agitation, nausea, sleep and eating disorders. Some can also result in weight gain. The suitability of a particular drug depends upon the patient’s case history. The consulting psychiatrist will decide what drug to prescribe. If you venture to choose a medicine on your own, it may not have the desired side effects or may cause adverse behavior.

One very important thing to remember that there is always a minimum duration required for any such drug to be effective. The medication will have to be taken over the course of such time. It is not recommended to withdraw or stop using the drug before the recommended period and without consulting your physician. The drugs cannot be taken on an as-and-when needed basis. It is always advisable to ask your doctor for any clarification if you are in doubt.
