There are 3 ways on how to treat teen depression: professional counseling, antidepressant medications, and hospitalization. Seeking professional counseling is the best way to treat depression if the signs are mild and the depression has not been happening for a while. Professional counseling prevents the patient from severely suffering from his present state. When to seek professional counseling?

If the child has been showing signs of sadness that is manifested on frequent crying with no apparent reason, it may be advisable to seek for professional counseling. Since sadness may appear in other ways such as decreased or loss of interest on activities including those they once enjoyed, isolation from the crowd or a group activities and gathering, sensitivity to negative feedback and rejection of others, restlessness and guilt, these behavior should also be observed.
Tip! The first step to stress management is to identify stress factors, and the second step is to recognize the steps to help change the situation.

Remember that depression must be treated immediately so that the patient would not have to suffer long enough that may lead to further damage. On the early signs, never hesitate to seek for professional counseling. Antidepressant medication is often given to patients with mild to severe cases. If depression happens to be showing signs mentioned above plus signs of pessimism and hopelessness on the reason of living, anger and irritability, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, alcohol or lack of self-confidence that could be the cause of low self-esteem and physical pain such as problems with the digestive system, lethargy, and headaches with no apparent reason, then the antidepressant medication can be the best way. This of course often comes wit professional counseling.
Tip! Anger or bitterness poisons you and impedes your recovery.

If depression has not been treated immediately or the attack has been very fast and the patient is suffering from many signs mentioned above plus the thought of death or suicide, plans or thoughts of physically hurting him or others, abuse on the use of drugs and alcohol and psychosis or detachment from reality, hospitalization is the last option.

The length of treatment may depend on the severity of the case and how well the patient responds to the treatment. Usually, mild depression treatment can last for several days to few weeks. This is because treatment would only include hours of counseling. For patients with severe signs that require hospitalization, treatment may last for several months or even years. The most difficult part of treatment is rehabilitation and preparing the patient back to the reality he left. This is of course for the worst patients. Usually, post depression treatment is needed. This is the rehabilitation stage.
