Many people have suffered from bouts of depression at some point in their lives. Depression often results in people losing interest in normal daily activities and it results in lack of energy and enthusiasm.

A depressed person is unproductive for the period of depression and withdraws into a shell, shunning social contact on account of a feeling of insufficiency or despair.

There are a number of reasons that may trigger depression. Losing a job, losing money, divorce, loss of a loved one are examples of reasons that may result in depression. It is not just environmental influences that cause depression; one of the major contributing factors is lack of self-esteem and confidence.

There are a number of means by which we can fight depression and bounce back to our normal selves. One of them is medication. Medication at best is a palliative. It needs to be backed up by active efforts on our part to become functional again.

There are a number of alternatives to medicines for fighting depression. The first most important thing is to give ourselves a sense of direction. We need to set small goals that can be achieved. This gives us a feeling of achievement.

There is nothing like hard physical exercise to fight depression. Exercise releases feel good chemicals that improve your mood and self-esteem. Regular exercise is a great help to fight depression as it lifts your mood. Get into the habit of going out for a brisk walk or a jog early morning. The fresh hair in your face will help you to open up your senses.

Other alternatives that work as antidepressants are:

Get a good night’s sleep. Eight hours of undisturbed sleep helps us to wake up as fresh as a daisy and take on the world.

Eat well and eat healthy. Cut out the high calorie and junk food from your diet. This along with exercise will help you to loose weight. It will help your self-esteem and confidence to return.
Pray to god. Spirituality helps you to deal with life. Prayer helps you to become strong and it gives you confidence.

Coping with depression may not be easy. Many things in life are tough. The end results are however well worth the effort.
