Anti-depressants are usually more effective than other forms of medication for the treatment of people suffering from depression. Mild or moderate forms of depression can be cured just by psychotherapy. Depression in advanced stage should be treated with the help of a suitable anti-depressant medication. There are different kinds of anti-depressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic anti-depressants. These drugs increase the concentration of certain neurotransmitter chemicals in the central nervous system (CNS). The first class of drugs acts only on serotonin neurotransmitter. On the other hand, tricyclic drugs act on other transmitters as well. They may also interact with other chemicals in your body. One very important thing to remember that there is always a minimum duration required for any such drug to be effective. The medication will have to be taken over the course of such time. It is not recommended to withdraw or stop using the drug before the recommended period and without consulting your physician. The drugs cannot be taken on an as-and-when needed basis. It is always advisable to ask your doctor for any clarification if you are in doubt. Related Articles |
