In normal cases of depression, people feel unmotivated, lethargic and reluctant to carry on with even the simplest of day-to-day chores. Some people have a different experience.  They feel anger, irritation and agitation. This form of depression is known as agitated depression.

In this case, instances of agitation are very common. Agitation may be seen in other depressive disorders also, but it is not as conspicuous as in agitated depression. There are specific symptoms of this ailment. The most prominent among them are motor agitation, intense inner tension and frequent racing thoughts. If a person is going through an episode of major depression, there is a likelihood of it deteriorating into a state of agitated depression at a later stage.

There are different forms of clinical agitated depression. The forms are psychotic agitated depression, non-psychotic depression and excited anxious depression. There are certain symptoms that are common to all these forms.

If a person is never able to sit still, or keeps restlessly pacing up and down all the time, it can be due to this specific disorder. Some other symptoms are frequent outbursts and pulling of hair or tearing of clothes.

Adult people are more prone to this type of depression. It is not as if younger people are not affected. It is much more common amongst the middle aged and elderly. Although there are specific symptoms, it is not necessary that it will be significantly different from other forms of depression.

Agitated state can be a manifestation of a state of the bipolar disorder, and it can have some serious implications. This is more common nowadays in comparison to the past. It is yet to be proved that an agitated state of depression is part of an incident of bipolar depression.

This ailment is known by several names. In the past it was called Melancholia Agitata. It is also known as mixed mania.
