At the age group of 13-19, the mind is full of enthusiasm and ready to accept new changes and challenges. At this point of life, teenagers encounter new experiences. They have number of expectations. One of the biggest reasons for teenage depression is that expectations are not met and they are not able to adjust to the changes that are taking place in their lives. Teenagers may experience bad moods, irritability, and feeling of hopelessness and a sense of failure when they are not able to achieve goals. If these symptoms persist, these symptoms turn into depression. Some of the symptoms are described below * Disturbed pattern of sleeping and eating * Poor academic performance and unwillingness to attend school * Significant weight gain or loss * Refraining from participating in activities like dancing, singing, playing, studying * Not interested in interacting with friends and family * Poor memory * Suffering from feelings of guilt * Feeling of worthlessness * Becoming extremely cynical and pessimistic * Excessive anger and restlessness * Addiction to smoking and drinking Causes Reasons of depression may vary in different people. There are some common causes that can leads to this disease. Sudden death of a loved one, parent's divorce, breaking up with girlfriend or boy friend or moving to a new area can lead to depression. In teenagers, depression can also occur due to continuous negligence by parents, friends or teachers. Absence of friends, abuse and bullying, too many changes in a short span of time or damage to self-esteem can also cause a feeling of melancholy and result in depression. Lack of the ability to adapt to change may also cause depression in teenagers. Depression can also occur due to past experiences such as childhood abuse of either a physical or a mental nature. Such experiences may trigger off major depression and anxieties later in life. If a teenager is not provided with emotional support and counseling, he or she may become a victim of depression. Effects Depression can have a negative effect on the behaviors and attitude of a teenager. Depression may also manifest itself in the following ways. * Lack of confidence- depression tends to break the confidence level of a person. * Alcohol and drug addiction- to overcome depression, teenagers start smoking and drinking. * Lack of enthusiasm in academics * Suicidal tendencies If you notice symptoms of depression in a teenager, then you should not take these symptoms casually.
