Almost every individual deals with mild stress. But, there are some who deal with acute stress levels and may even deal with various stress related problems like depression such as depression and bipolar disorder. Antipsychotics, a category of medication helps deal with such problems.

Antipsychotics is one of the most effective category of medications used to fight stress. This category of medication is typically used to treat bipolar disorder, which is a manic depressive disorder. However, these medicines may also be used as mood stabilizers and help deal with stress related conditions like depression.

Types of antipsychotics
Antipsychotics can be broadly divided into two different categories- typical antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics.

Typical antipsychotics- This category of medications is the first generation antipsychotics. They were first developed in the 1950s and used to treat several stress related conditions like agitation, acute mania and several others. Typical antipsychotics are more likely to cause extrapyramidal side effects. Atypical antipsychotics- These are the newer medicines in the category of antipsychotics. They differ from typical antipsychotics in term of their composition and the side effects they may cause. Some of the most commonly used atypical antipsychotics are Clozaril, Geodon, Invega, Risperadal, Seroquel, Zyprexa and several others.

Use of antipsychotic medications
Ideally, this category of medication serves as the appropriate treatment for anyone who is experiencing any of the symptoms of psychosis. People who experience hallucinations or delusions can also benefit from these medications.

Several disorders that are characterized by psychotic symptoms can be treated using antipsychotics. Some such disorders are bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and postpartum psychosis.

Further on, they may be used as mood stabilizers. People suffering from chronic stress often experience extreme mood swings. Antipsychotics can help stabilize the mood and help deal better with stress and related conditions.

Prescription only medication
Unlike several other stress relief medications that are available both via prescription and over the counter, antipsychotics are only available via prescription. You should never use these medicines without medical supervision.

Dosage
The dosage of this category of stress relief medication varies from one individual to the other.

Safety status
Long term use of antipsychotics may cause a reduction in the number of white blood cells. This can suppress the immune system and make you more susceptible to various diseases and health problems. However, the kind of side effect primarily depends upon the kind of antipsychotic medication in use. Considering the numerous side effects that these medicines may bring along, they are not preferred as the first line of treatment.
