4 A's Of Stress Management


Rising levels of stress in the modern world have made people more susceptible to many diseases as well as emotional issues. High paced lifestyles, coupled with the demands of the time, make it difficult for most of us to relax. Now, while some of us can deal with everyday tensions fairly easily, others often fall prey to its ravages. Thus, it's very important for us to find ways to deal with it before it causes us considerable harm.

Stress levels differ from person to person and therefore, the management technique employed should be devised on an individual basis. Since there's no single stress management plan that fits every situation or individual, it would be prudent to experiment with new strategies and methods to deal with the same. Though, whatever plan you follow, should ideally adhere to the 4 A's of stress management that includes avoid, alter, adapt and accept.

The first stress management strategy is avoidance. The best way to avoid stressful situations is to protect yourself from getting into a situation where you're likely to suffer from tensions. Learn to say no if the task at hand seems a little too difficult and avoid people who add to your daily tensions. Also, try and control your environment as much as possible. If the evening news stresses you out, don't watch them and also avoid discussing topics that get you hot under the collar. Analyze your everyday routine and make sure that you focus on what's important, rather than wasting your energy on every little triviality.

If that doesn't work, you can try and alter the situation. Start by expressing your feelings, instead of repressing them. But, be open to compromises as well. Being more assertive and in control of your schedule can also help you combat stress successfully.

If your stress is caused by a long term issue, you may consider adapting to it, instead of trying to fight it. You can easily do so by reframing your problems and looking at the bigger picture to see where you stand. If the problem is unlikely to persist beyond a few months or even a year, it would be more prudent to expend your energy elsewhere. Also, look for quality instead of perfection. More reasonable standards will prevent you from getting disappointed or discouraged. And as long as you focus on the positive, you're unlikely to suffer from any of the serious consequences of stress.

Lastly, learn to accept things you cannot change. If you cannot control the situation, don't even attempt to do so as you'll simply end up getting frustrated. Always, try and look for a silver lining and vent to a close family member or friend every time you feel the stress threatening to overwhelm you. Also, actively practicing forgiveness can help you overcome several of the tensions and anxieties that life throws at you.
